CompTIA A+ Certification Training Overview

The CompTIA A+ Certification exam is for many people their first exposure to the IT Certification testing process. While it can seem a little daunting at first, it is actually a fairly straightforward process. First and foremost, make sure you start your journey toward A+ Certification with the proper tools. Palaestra Training's CompTIA A+ Certification Training series is an excellent way to prepare yourself properly.

Once you have your training material, it is a matter of putting in the time to study properly and learn not just how something is done, but also why. Memorizing an answer will not prepare you for the real world. You might be able to pass a test, but when your faced with the challenges of real-world troubleshooting, you need to know why something works the way it does. Knowing why allows you to gain a deeper understanding into how things interconnect and how things should be functioning. As a desktop support technician or help desk technician, being able to think quickly and analyze complex issues is a definite plus.

A+ Training and the Real World

As you go through your training, make sure you review your training material often and think about how each thing you learn applies to the real world. When you approach your studies, start with the end in mind. Ask yourself, "What do I want to learn today?" or "What is my expected outcome?" Knowing what you are looking for ahead of time makes it much easier to know it when you see it. The light bulb goes on that much faster, and things make sense that much more quickly. Once you feel comfortable with the information your learning, the next step would be to start taking practice tests to validate you are in fact retaining the information. As you become more and more proficient and your scores continue to increase, it will be time to take the real exam.

In reality, it is always a good idea to schedule your exam right away, even if you need to schedule it a month or two ahead. Studies have shown that when you have a hard date in front of you, you work harder, become more organized, and retain more information. Having a date to work toward sets a hard goal and formalizes your study time.

CompTIA A+ Certification Testing Centers

Taking the exams to become CompTIA A+ certified is a matter of registering online and scheduling the test. You can go online to either Pearson Vue, or Prometric and locate a testing center near your location. To become CompTIA A+ Certified, you must pass two exams. You must pass the "essentials" exam (220-601) and then your choice of one of following three elective exams:

  • 220-602 - IT Technician
  • 220-603 - Remote Support Technician
  • 220-604 - Depot Technician

The exam is administered via computer, and the test is timed. Your not allowed to take cameras, cell-phones, paper, etc., into the testing facility; however they typically provide you with scratch paper. Keep in mind they collect the scratch paper at the end of the exam.

Success, You're A+ Certified!

Once your done, your test is graded immediately and you will know right away if you passed or not. Once you pass both exams, you become an official CompTIA A+ Certified Technician!
